"You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice."

Why this exists

This began in a hospital room, three days after surgery

I didn't know what my life would look like. Nobody told me it could still be a good one. This site is the resource I wish I'd had that week.

Davie After Surgery

About Strength After Surgery

Strength After Surgery exists because recovery is about more than healing tissue.

Surgery may repair the body, but it does not automatically restore confidence, clarity, or a sense of ease in everyday life. For many people living after major surgery, recovery continues long after medical appointments end and restrictions are lifted.

This project was created to support that longer, often quieter phase of recovery. The part where people are expected to “get back to normal” without much guidance on how to do so safely, sustainably, or with trust in themselves.

The Gap After Surgery

After surgery, many people find themselves navigating a gap between medical clearance and real life.

Clinically, the body may be considered healed. In practice, uncertainty often remains. Questions around movement, strength, fatigue, confidence, and identity can feel unanswered or overlooked. People may wonder how much to do, what to avoid, or how to rebuild physical capability without fear of causing harm.

This uncertainty can make everyday decisions feel heavier than they should, leaving people unsure how to move forward, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.

Strength After Surgery exists to help bridge that gap.

An Integrated Approach

This work brings together lived experience, professional practice, and long-term thinking around health, fitness, and recovery.

Rather than focusing on quick fixes or rigid programmes, Strength After Surgery centres on principles that support steady, sustainable progress over time. These principles recognise that bodies change, energy fluctuates, and recovery does not follow a straight line.

The approach is informed by:

  • Real-life experience of living with a stoma
  • Professional understanding of movement, strength, and health
  • Respect for individual circumstances and long-term wellbeing

The aim is not to prescribe a single path, but to offer structure, perspective, and reassurance as people find what works for them.

Restoring Trust

At its core, Strength After Surgery is about restoring trust.

Trust in your body, even when it feels unfamiliar.

Trust in your decisions, even when certainty is hard to find.

Trust in your ability to live well again, on your own terms.

Recovery is recognised here as individual, non-linear, and deeply human. Progress may be uneven. Setbacks may happen. Confidence may take time to return. None of this is a failure, it is part of the process.

This work respects recovery as something to be lived with, not rushed through.

Strength After Surgery Book Render

Beyond the Book

The book provides the foundation for this project, offering a framework for understanding strength, movement, and recovery after surgery. It is shaped by my own experience of major surgery and living with a stoma, while recognising that many of the challenges of rebuilding health, confidence, and physical capability are shared across different surgical experiences.
This site exists to support the journey beyond it.

Here, you’ll find resources, reflections, and practical tools designed to evolve alongside real life, not as instructions to follow perfectly, but as guidance to return to when clarity, reassurance, or understanding is needed.

The intention is to complement medical care, not replace it, and to provide a space where recovery is approached thoughtfully and with care.

Who This Is For

Strength After Surgery is for anyone navigating the space between surgery and healing, looking for a calm, respectful, and empowering approach to rebuilding strength, confidence, and trust in their body.

As someone living with a stoma, I created this work to help other ostomates navigate the journey of rebuilding after surgery. But the framework is not limited to life with a stoma. Its principles can be applied by anyone recovering from surgery and finding their way back to movement, strength, confidence, and everyday life.

Whether you are early in recovery or further along the road, Strength After Surgery is grounded in the belief that strength can be rebuilt patiently, intelligently, and in a way that honours both the body and the person living in it.

Invictus

William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
